Horse Racing Records

Horse Racing, a sport which has truly stood the test of time, has drawn the interest (as well as the wagers) of common people and royalty alike. Referred to as "The Sport of Kings", thoroughbred Horse Racing is a multi-national equestrian sport. As in most sports, the legacy of a horse is not only upheld by the races it wins, but also by the records it holds.

One way racing times are recorded are based on the length of the track they are run on. Measured in miles as well as furlongs (1/8th of a mile), records are held in all categories. For instance, the fastest time recorded for the two mile race was by Petrone, who ran the race in a blazing time of 3 minutes, 18 seconds at Hollywood Park on July 23rd, 1969. Mr. Light ran half that distance on January 3rd, 2005 at Gulfstream Park in just under half the time, 1 minute, 31.41 seconds. In many respects, Petrone's record is revered a little more because the horse not only had to be quick, but also had to have the endurance to keep the excruciating pace for two miles.

Another way to take records into consideration is the ground on which the races are run. For instance, turf allows for better traction than dirt, so records are kept in both categories. In the four furlong races, Fine Tassles holds the turf record for running it in 46 and 3/5ths seconds, while Ameri Brilliance ran it on dirt in 43.76 seconds (which happens to be the overall world record for that distance). While all of these marks are amazing, records are made to be broken. Horse Racing isn't going anywhere it seems, so it stands to reason that before long, new records will be held in these as well as all categories.
